Auburn will reportedly have an opening on its defensive staff.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reports that Tigers linebacker coach Josh Aldridge has agreed to become East Carolina’s new defensive coordinator.

It’s a big move for Aldridge after spending the past 6 seasons working alongside Hugh Freeze.

Freeze took the head coaching job at Liberty in 2019. Aldridge was part of the initial staff, and was the defensive line coach for 3 seasons. In 2022, Aldridge was promoted to co-defensive coordinator by Freeze, also serving as the Flames’ linebackers coach.

When Freeze took the Auburn job in late 2022, Aldridge followed. Aldridge was named linebackers coach when he joined the Auburn staff. This past season, he served as the defensive edge coach.

Aldridge was a strong recruiter on the trail at Auburn. His top commitments include 2025 signee Jared Smith (4-stars, No. 2 edge, No. 30 overall), 2026 pledge Hezeikiah Harris (4-stars, No. 5 edge, No. 48 overall) 2024 signee Amaris Williams (4-stars, No. 6 edge, No. 62 overall) and 2024 signee Demarcus Riddick (4-stars, No. 5 linebacker, No. 69 overall).

ECU made a head coaching change this year. Mike Houston was fired after a 3-4 start to the season. Interim coach Blake Harrell led the Pirates to 4 consecutive victories and was made the full-time head coach. Harrell was previously the team’s defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.
