Gus Malzahn will soon have to fill a key role on his Auburn staff.

According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, new Florida State head coach Mike Norvell is hiring Auburn offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham to serve in the same role on the Seminoles’ staff. Dillingham previously worked under Norvell at Memphis and Arizona State.

Dillingham spent only one season with the Tigers. He was at Memphis from 2016-18 and at Arizona State from 2014-15. He had never been an offensive coordinator at the college level prior to this past season at Auburn.

Norvell was announced as Florida State’s new head coach on Sunday. He was previously the head coach at Memphis from 2016-19 and an assistant at Arizona State from 2012-15.

Although Dillingham was the offensive coordinator for Auburn this year, Malzahn was the one calling the offensive plays. He had stopped calling plays from 2016-18, before taking back the responsibility for 2019.

With Dillingham on the way out, it’s unknown whether Malzahn will continue to call plays and hire somebody to fill Dillingham’s exact role or if he’d consider hiring somebody who would call plays themselves.

Auburn still has one game remaining this season, as it will play Minnesota in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN.
