Auburn is heading back to Atlanta for another high-profile season opener in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. The school announced plans to open the 2018 season against the Washington Huskies in Atlanta Thursday morning.

The game will be held on Sept. 1, 2018, and will be played in Atlanta’s new Mercedes-Benz Stadium that has yet to be opened.

The matchup potentially sets up one of the best head-to-head coaching matchups in a kickoff game in some time, as both Gus Malzahn and Chris Petersen currently have their teams running in high gear toward a potential playoff birth this season.

Neither coach is a stranger to winning in Atlanta, as Malzahn has helped coach multiple SEC championship teams at Auburn and even played Louisville in this game to open the 2015 season. Meanwhile in 2011, Petersen and his Boise State team traveled all the way to Atlanta to defeat Georgia in the season opener that year.

Auburn and Washington have never met on the football field but very well could meet in a potential playoff game before the 2018 season opener ever arrives.
