Week 3 of college football has a massive Top 25 matchup on deck as No. 22 Auburn travels to State College to face No. 10 Penn State. It’s set for a primetime kickoff on ABC, with ESPN’s lead commentary team of Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Holly Rowe set to call Saturday night’s game from Happy Valley.

The game has been declared a “whiteout”, a tradition that’s relatively new at Beaver Stadium as it started in 2004. It’s usually reserved for when Big Ten opponents come to town; in fact, Saturday will be the first time the Whiteout game has featured a non-conference opponent — or an opponent outside of Michigan or Ohio State, for that matter — since Alabama in 2011.

And Fowler will be keeping an eye on how Bryan Harsin’s Tigers respond as they try to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

“I think it’s sort of the great unknown,” Fowler told PennLive.com’s Daniel Gallen on Thursday. “We’re used to seeing opponents go in there with veteran players who have experienced a Whiteout before, whether it’s Ohio State or Michigan. The newness of this kind of adds to the intrigue, and the fact that it’s the first big test of his tenure at Auburn is exciting, too.”

This will be just the 3rd time the Nittany Lions and Tigers have met on the gridiron, with the 2 teams splitting the all-time series.
