That was certainly ugly.

The Clemson Tigers destroyed the Auburn Tigers Sunday 84-53 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Although the 31-point margin was massive, it obviously wasn’t the largest margin of defeat in program history. That belonged to Georgia in 1913, where the Tigers lost by 80. So, the record is still intact. At one point, Clemson was beating Auburn by 40.

Auburn just couldn’t get anything going offensively, and the Tigers finished with three players — Bryce Brown, Mustapha Heron and Horace Spencer — in double figures. Brown and Heron both scored 12 points, while Spencer added 10. As a team, Auburn shot just 24.6 percent (17-66) from the field. Really.

Clemson, meanwhile, shot 47.5 percent from the field and hit 16-23 free throws. Gabe DeVoe led the Tigers with 22 points, while Elijah Thomas scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Although Sunday wasn’t ideal for Auburn, the Tigers had a big season. As regular season SEC Champions, the Tigers have nothing to hang their heads about.

Clemson advances to the Sweet 16 to face No. 1 seed Kansas on March 23.
