Derrick Brown has been one of the few bright spots for the Carolina Panthers in 2023. The fourth-year defensive lineman has dominated this season and now has set an NFL single-season record.

On Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brown collected his 99th tackle of the season. That is the most tackles a defensive lineman has had in a season since 1994 when the stat was first counted. No defensive lineman has ever broken triple digits.

Brown has developed into one of the best DLs in the league after being drafted in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Brown dominated for the Auburn Tigers in college, collecting 12.5 sacks and 33 tackles for loss over 4 seasons. The big lineman was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.

Brown has been a keystone of the Panthers’ defense since being selected. The DL has never played in fewer than 14 games in a season and has had at least 5 tackles for loss each year.

The Panthers have struggled mightily in 2023, currently sitting at 2-14 with one game to go. If there’s one bright spot, it’s the fact that the defense, led by Brown, is No. 3 in the league in opponent yards per game.
