Two people believe Auburn senior quarterback Nick Marshall has a future as an NFL quarterback.

Marshall, himself, and Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn.

“Yeah, there’s no doubt,” Malzahn said on his weekly radio show Monday night, according to AL.com. “He’s one of the better quarterbacks in the entire country and I feel like he’s one of the better overall players in the country. He’s definitely an NFL player. He’s much improved and I think he’ll do nothing but get better.”

Marshall’s on pace for a better season statistically than his breakout season in 2013. He’s thrown for 1,357 yards and 13 touchdowns to just four interceptions. He’s rushed for 631 yards and four scores.

Marshall has protected the ball better this season, though according to AL.com’s Brandon Marcello, many scouts view Marshall as an athlete or as a defensive back — which he played during his one season at Georgia.

Malzahn has been vocal regarding Marshall’s improvement as a pocket passer, though his completion percentage doesn’t reflect much improvement. There’s no arguing, however, that when the spotlight is brightest, Marshall plays his best.

“In our league, what he’s done, I have no looked at the records about who he has played and all that, but he’s played numerous top 25, numerous top 10 [teams] and he’s played his best games,” Malzahn said. “He’s got the ability to make plays with his feet, he’s got a great arm. I think everybody saw that the other night when he threw it [57] yards on one step right there and threw a dart. He’ll get nothing but better.”

Marshall used his legs to escape the pocket and extend plays routinely in the win over Ole Miss. He threw two bombs to Sammie Coates — the aforementioned 57-yard touchdown pass and another pass in which he threw it 62 yards and hit Coates in stride.

Against four ranked opponents this season, Marshall has averaged more than 225 yards through the air and more than 75 yards rushing. The Tigers went 3-1 in those games, their only loss coming on the road at No. 1 Mississippi State.

Marshall said playing quarterback in the NFL is his dream in a January interview with AL.com.

“I know I’ll be able to play quarterback at the next level,” Marshall said.
