Gus Malzahn shares latest on Auburn WRs Seth Williams, Anthony Schwartz
Auburn has a deeply talented receiving corps, but the injury bug has limited depth so far. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn confirmed it will again be the case in Week 3 against Kent State.
Leading WR Seth Williams will not play while he deals with a shoulder injury. Malzahn made it clear that you don’t expect any single pass-catcher to step in and replace Williams.
“He’s s a guy you can’t replace. He’s the real deal,” Malzahn said Thursday night on his weekly radio show. He indicated the Tigers will likely play multiple wideouts in Williams’ absence.
The Williams’ news came with a positive update on another Tigers wide receiver. Malzahn said Anthony Schwartz will get to play more. The sophomore speedster suffered a hand injury in fall camp ahead of Week 1 against Oregon. Schwartz was Auburn’s No. 4 receiver in 2018 (22 catches for 357 yards and 2 TD) in 2018.
Auburn’s Gus Malzahn said on Tiger Talk that Anthony Schwartz will get more time as he comes back from injury. But fellow receiver Seth Williams is out with a bad shoulder.
‘He’s s a guy you can’t replace. He’s the real deal.’
Now, ‘We may play multiple guys at that position.’

Who starts in place of Seth Williams?
Gus Malzahn said Anthony Schwartz will be on the field a little bit more (though it remains to be seen if he’ll have the cast off). The rest will be by committee (Marquis McClain played last week, and Zach Farrar is a possibility).
