Gus Malzahn shares latest on injuries, suggests lengthy absence for defensive tackle
At the start of fall camp, Auburn has a few players who are looking to get healthy.
Meeting with the media after Friday’s first fall practice, Tigers coach Gus Malzahn gave a rundown of the current injury report. The headlining absences from Friday’s practice were DT Coynis Miller Jr. and OT Prince Michael Sammons. Malzahn noted that he’s hopeful Miller, a potential starter on the defensive line, will be able to return before the team’s season-opener against Oregon on Aug. 31. Sammons is expected to return “after fall camp,” per Malzahn.
DT Daquan Newkirk was the subject of a less positive injury update. He is recovering from a second Achilles injury suffered this spring. Reporters were quick to note that Malzahn said he hoped to have Newkirk back “before the end of the season,” suggesting he may miss most of the 2019 campaign.
As SDS noted earlier, Malzahn also shared that RB D.J. Williams was limited to non-contact drills after undergoing a shoulder procedure following spring practice.
