Hugh Freeze explains why the transfer portal is a 'bad lesson for life'
The transfer portal has become an undeniable part of college sports with thousands of players entering the portal across college football every year.
The portal can be a great tool for players looking for a better fit, but plenty of coaches and fans have their qualms with the prominence of transferring in today’s college football landscape.
Hugh Freeze believes there are plenty of negative implications that come with the transfer portal.
“There’s too many voices in the heads of these young men,” Freeze said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “I think they get bad advice and we’ve made it really, really easy for you to quit something because it’s hard. I think that’s a bad lesson for now, and a bad lesson for life.”
Freeze mentioned that he’s developing a program called SOAR set out to develop relationships between athletes and members of the staff, with the hope of keeping players on the team.
“We’ve got a group of men in this building, that’s one of their sole charges is developing relationships with these young kids to try to convince them of truth and not believing some lies, or hopes,” Freeze said. “And so I don’t know if any of us are ever going to be 100% in it and it certainly makes it very difficult to manage your recruiting and roster management. But it’s part of the game now and it’s not part that many of us like. But you better pay attention to it for sure, because it’s here.”
