Liberty’s season opener just got more interesting.

The second season of the Hugh Freeze era at Liberty begins on Saturday and following last season’s 8-5 record, which included a win over Georgia Southern in the Cure Bowl, the anticipation for what’s to come for the Flames in 2020 has never been higher entering a season.

The Flames are set to open the season on the road at Western Kentucky in a game set to begin at noon ET on ESPNU.

Now we can add another level of intrigue with the Liberty program as former Auburn Tigers Malik Willis has been named the team’s starting quarterback by Freeze on Monday according to A Sea of Red.

Willis transferred out of Auburn and to Liberty during the offseason leading up to the 2019 season but his waiver to play immediately last fall was denied by the NCAA. Now eligible to compete for the Flames, the former Tiger from Atlanta will finally be able to showcase his talent on the college gridiron.

Before leaving Auburn, Willis had the opportunity to compete against Bo Nix and Joey Gatewood for the right to win the starting job on The Plains but he left following spring practice.

The Atlanta native was rated as a three-star prospect in the 2017 recruiting cycle out of Roswell High School and signed with Auburn over scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Air Force.
