Kirk Herbstreit weighs in on Auburn QB situation, season win total
ESPN College GameDay host Kirk Herbstreit spent part of his Sunday on Twitter taking questions from fans about the upcoming season.
When one fan asked about Auburn, Herbstreit offered his opinion on which quarterback should lead the offense and what would constitute a good season for the Tigers.
And play Clemson, A&M, LSU in 1st 4 weeks-They need Franklin to be the guy (playmaker at QB). 8 wins would be huge! https://t.co/OhDNBJESA6

AU coach Gus Malzahn has yet to name his first-team signal-caller as Franklin is in a three-way battle for the starting job with Jeremy Johnson and Sean White. Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee discussed the state of the competition with the media on Saturday.
Lashlee recognizes that Herbstreit isn’t alone in expecting Franklin to be the starter:
Auburn OC Rhett Lashlee: "I just hop everyone is fair to (John Franklin III) with expectations. #MGMAuburn

As far as eight wins being “huge,” that number would exceed Saturday Down South senior writer John Crist’s projection in his game-by-game prediction for the Tigers this fall. In May, the South Point Casino in Las Vegas set the over/under for Auburn’s win total in 2016 at 6.5 games.
I disagee. At best, Auburn wins 5. At worst, 3. Auburn will most likely go winless in the SEC. The fact that Auburn can’t name a leader for the QB situation should tell you how poor Franklin is doing. The other two tomatoes at QB are horrible. If Franklin can’t pull away from them by now, Auburn must be seeing exactly what FSU didn’t see in him. Wave goodbye to Gus. He and his nice BMW are about to take the long way home.
I love how so many fans think they alone can use a crystal ball to see into the future. Remember 2010? Auburn was predicted to go 6-6. Remember 2013? 6.5 wins predicted per CBS.
Remember how they were picked to have a Heisman trophy winner last year and possibly dethrone Alabama? How’d that work out. I just think a team that can’t find a QB when last year’s QBs were as bad as Auburn’s and they just kicked their best RB off the team, they are going to have a tough go of it. I’ll also point out that Gus has won fewer games each year with better talent. How many games do you see the dumpster fire winning? You know my guess.
All I’m saying is that keyboard warriors like you have no idea how this season will shake out. I bet you were spouting this nonsense in 2013 too. Last season’s high expectations were predicated on JJ’s first half against Arkansas in 2014. That’s why preseason predictions are ridiculous with Auburn. We’re a dual quarterback based offense. If we find a guy that can do the zone read well enough, Alabama and everyone else are going to be in for a tough game.
Sean White was a RS freshman QB thrown into the fire. He was injured during the Arkansas game. He will make you eat your words .
You really are dense, aren’t you? When someone points out how bad previous predictions have been, you continue with your predictions. Sometimes not having a QB picked out before the season just means it is a close race. Period.
Your predictions are no better than anyone elses’s so I would not get too worked up about them. Lately AU has done the opposite of the predictions – and I predict that may happen again. And I predict you will continue to badmouth them – until mid-season.
Unfortunately for you we can laugh at this post in just week 3 after we beat TAMU under the lights at Jordan-Hare.
LMFAO. Just worry about week one right now. SMH.
Gus isn’t going anywhere. One thing is certain about college football, things never turn out as they are predicted to in July and August.
If you have not already sold your Auburn stock, it is too late. Just take the tax write-off and move on.
You still have time to sell your Tennessee stock before it crashes.
Can’t wait till all you bamers eat your words. And also can’t wait till Tennessee whoops y’alls ass this year. We will surprise a lot of people this year. And I am glad jovon is gone the last thing we need is another Duke Williams screwing with the teams mojo this year
Yeah. Duke Williams was the problem last year. Did you see Matthews and Ford trying to tackle Fournette? No heart. That was and is the problem. I do agree that Auburn could surprise this year but not how you think. The surprise could be a week 2 loss to Arkansas State. The dumpster fire is roaring and all Auburn can do at this point is watch it burn.
Your opinion is worthless.
I would love for Jeremy Johnson to win the job and go out with a bang! Jason Campbell was horrible his junior year then was great his senior. Jeremy has the talent and arm and he has no pressure this year
Auburn always wins when no one predicts them to!
2012 disagrees with your comment.
They don’t have a QB, RB or heart. Good luck with that.
I love all the other teams so-called fans coming to Auburn stories to try and run down the Tigers. Make sure you come back midseason and later – your tune will changes (or more likely you won’t post).
