During Saturday’s “College GameDay” from Athens, ESPN’s Lee Corso said that Auburn is the one program that does not let him sport the headgear.

“Last week, Auburn looked good in beating No. 23 Kentucky,” Corso said during the pregame show. “Georgia had to rally to beat Arkansas, a team that lost 23 straight games. So Auburn has the edge. Since Auburn is the only school that won’t let me wear their mascot head, I got no other choice, go beautiful Dawgs.”

Corso’s GameDay colleague Kirk Herbstreit asked him about the Aubie headgear ban in a video posted on Twitter. Corso told Herbstreit he didn’t know why he isn’t allowed.

“I never pick them anymore. They’re done,” he offered.

Mark Helm of AL.com, however, notes that an explanation was offered back in 2015:

“Auburn is the only school in America that will not let me put on the headgear,” Corso said, per an AL.com report. “They have some kind of rule that you have got to be a special kind of human being to wear this guy’s headgear.”

… ESPN College GameDay producer Lee Fitting explained why Auburn doesn’t allow the gear to be worn on the broadcast.

“It’s like the War Eagle Club tradition that no one puts on the mascot, except for the kid who’s the mascot,” Fitting told AL.com in 2015. “It’s one of those things we respect and find other means – don the old-school leather football helmet and move on.”

We’ll see if Aubie headgear ban puts Corso in any more awkward situations this season.
