Cam Newton routinely wears custom shoes on game days before, during and after games.

But the former Auburn quarterback took a strong stance on Thursday night as his Carolina Panthers prepared to play the Pittsburgh Steelers. Paying tribute to victims of the recent synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Newton’s cleats had “Stronger than hate,” and “Hatred can’t weaken a city of steel.”

Interestingly, Pittsburgh WR Antonio Brown is expected to wear his own custom shoes in the game that have similar messages of Newton’s.

Sports is always a positive landing spot in times of tragedy, and this is another example. People can come together and put aside tragic events that have rocked a city and the nation.

This game has plenty of intrigue to it as Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers (5-2-1) will play host to Newton and the Panthers (6-2) in a game between two of the NFL’s best this season.
