In preparation for Saturday’s matchup between Auburn and Georgia, Saturday Down South is taking a look at the key matchups that may decide the showdown between the Tigers and Bulldogs.

Georgia QB Hutson Mason vs. Auburn secondary

Coming off a game in which it allowed 277 yards and four touchdowns on 19 of 29 passing to Texas A&M true freshman Kyle Allen, a key matchup in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry on Saturday night will be Georgia signal-caller Hutson Mason against Ellis Johnson’s secondary.

Mason was near perfect last week against Kentucky, finishing 13 of 16 for 174 yards and four touchdowns. He registered a quarterback rating of 99.3 on a scale of 100. He was efficient, stood in pocket and threw the ball accurately and had arguably his best game leading the Georgia offense.

Mason is protected by the most experienced offensive line in the league, which presents a huge challenge for an Auburn defense that has been unable to generate a pass rush this season. Still, though, it’s the secondary that Mason will attack.

Auburn is decent on the perimeter of the field, though Jonathan Mincy has struggled in recent weeks at cornerback with mistimed jumps on balls thrown his way. It’s in the middle of the field, and particularly at the safety position, where the Tigers have had the most issues.

Mason has a great tight end in Jeb Blazevich, who has become a go-to target for the senior quarterback. Mason is comfortable and accurate when throwing across the middle of the field, which is where Allen had his success last week in Auburn.

The Tigers have not found a group of players they like in the defensive backfield, but this weekend presents another challenge for a secondary that leaves a defense with little room for error.
