The Indianapolis Colts chose former Auburn OL Braden Smith in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and he’ll be expected to step in and help solidify what has been a porous unit in recent years.

However, NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein thinks the former Tiger could have some growing pains as he prepares for his pro career.

In a list of seven early-round picks who could get off to slow starts this fall, Zierlein named Smith, saying his balance needs to be corrected before he can become an impact player:

Smith is big and powerful — he proved he could hold his own against Alabama’s elite defensive line. However, one area that really concerns me with Smith is his propensity to lose his balance and fall off blocks against active, athletic tackles. He’ll be seeing a lot of those players in the AFC South. Smith’s issue can be coached up and corrected, but it usually takes some time for that coaching to pay dividends on the field.

The Colts also took OL Quentin Nelson in Round 1, so perhaps Nelson can step in and play right away while Smith gets up to speed.

However, there are still a few months before the 2018 NFL campaign begins, so perhaps Smith can work through his issues quickly and prove Zierlein wrong.
