Paul Finebaum knows there are moving parts at Auburn, and during his regular segment with “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” on WJOX out of Birmingham, Alabama, he outlined how it might unfold.

Finebaum praised the expected hire of John Cohen, and said he’s an exceptional athletics director who can step in and make a decision on Day 1, which in this case is to fire Bryan Harsin.

The question becomes how the next steps will unfold as Finebaum figured the Cohen hire was left to a couple of signatures. Greg McElroy pointed out that he couldn’t figure why there would be hesitation about Cohen.

“If indeed he is the choice, and if indeed he has agreed on everything there is to agree on, then he ought to be named the AD today so they can get moving,” Finebaum said. “… The boosters want to control the AD, they do not want an AD having independence when hiring the football coach, which happened the last time.”

Finebaum said he was told that Cohen was hired with the understanding that he would have the authority to hire the next football coach.

“If John Cohen’s not the athletics director by the end of the day, then everything we have speculated in this conversation will have come true,” Finebaum said.
