Paul Finebaum watched the Allen Greene departure in real time, as his show on Friday came on the air shortly after news came out that the Auburn athletics director would step down.

“As somebody who has criticized Auburn a lot over the years, this was the right and necessary move,” Finebaum said. “… This was something that was a setup, that states the obvious, that most people at Auburn don’t think Bryan Harsin is going to make it. I’m talking administration-wise. And when that happens, why stay with a lame-duck athletics director who clearly has looked for other jobs. Get rid of him.”

Finebaum then said the most ridiculous part of Greene’s departure was the fake outrage from the national media and other people in the industry. Finebaum then referred to Tennessee AD Danny White congratulating Greene for “getting the heck out of a crazy situation.”

“The fact that a sitting SEC athletics director said what he did was very surprising,” Finebaum said. “Those athletics directors are hired to worry about their own athletic department, not to tweet about what happens to other places when they may not know all the facts.”

“He made a decision at Auburn to buck the system, and buck the hierarchy and he paid for it with his job,” Finebaum said. “Just like we all knew he would the moment Bryan Harsin had a bad first season.”
