Hugh Freeze has notable momentum at Auburn coming out of the weekend following a pair of 5-star commitments, another 4-star pledge and an offensive lineman transfer from Northwestern.

Auburn flipped a Georgia commit, and an Alabama commit, and when 5-star WR Perry Thompson committed to Auburn, the Tigers commits tossed Freeze in a pool to celebrate.

Paul Finebaum weighed in on the developments on Monday morning during his regular appearance on WJOX in Birmingham, Alabama and the “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” show.

“It feels like a moment in time that we will remember, Cole,” Finebaum said. “A moment in time that we will go back and say, ‘That was it. That was that week or 2 period in July 2023 when Auburn finally made the turn back toward the top.’ I’m not suggesting that they’ll get there tomorrow. All I’m saying is history has shown these moments have occurred and I know some people will come out of their chair when I go back to 1981 at the beginning of my career when Pat Dye flipped a player. And then ultimately got Bo Jackson as well. But that was that moment that we all remember back to, when Auburn started moving toward legitimacy.”

Finebaum said this is the beginning of a building foundation, and a turning point.

“Unless you have that, you can never really get off the ground, Hugh Freeze has that,” Finebaum said. “And I think it will prove to be a bountiful harvest.”

Finebaum said playing time always matters in a recruiting pitch, but being a part of something new and fresh is also appealing to recruits.

“Auburn hasn’t been in a position like this in some time,” Finebaum said. “The last 5 or 6 years have been depressing, even the last 2 or 3 years of Gus Malzahn, the train was off the track. … I can go to Auburn and be part of a class that will forever be remembered.”
