Paul Rhoads, a former Auburn defensive coordinator, is replacing another former Auburn DC on the coaching staff at Gulf Shores High in Alabama.

The Gulf Shores City Board of Education approved the hire of former Iowa State head coach and Auburn defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads on Thursday night, AL.com reported. Rhoads replaces Brian VanGorder as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator. VanGorder, also a former Auburn defensive coordinator, left after one year to become head coach at American Heritage-Delray (Fla.) High.

Rhoads has worked in coaching for 33 years of experience as a head coach, defensive coordinator and analyst. He spent the 2021 season as a defensive analyst for Ohio State. Rhoads spent the 2008 season as Auburn’s defensive coordinator before taking the head coaching job at Iowa State from 2009-2015. He went 32-55 with the Cyclones and reached 3 bowl games.

His other coaching stops include Utah State, Pacific, Pittsburgh, Arkansas, UCLA and Arizona.

VanGorder last year retired from college football coaching, and was hired as the new defensive coordinator at Gulf Shores High School in Alabama. He most recently was the defensive coordinator at Bowling Green State under former Auburn assistant Scot Loeffler.

At Georgia in 2003, VanGorder won the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in the nation. His college career also includes defensive coordinator stops at UCF, Central Michigan, Western Illinois, Notre Dame and Louisville in addition to Auburn and Bowling Green.
