Police arrested a suspect believed to have shot and killed Auburn football player Jakell Mitchell early Saturday morning.

According to Mitchell’s girlfriend, the redshirt freshman was in an argument with a man at an off-campus party when a third party pulled a gun and began shooting, AL.com reports.

“He just started shooting. Jakell fell on the ground and he tried to get back up and run, and then he fell again,” Mitchell’s girlfriend, Ayanna Hughuley, told the Associated Press. “He started shooting at Jakell again while Jakell was on the ground.”

Authorities arrested Markale Deanda Hart, 22, at 10:45 a.m. Sunday and charged him with murder. Police do not expect more arrests to be made, but the investigation will continue, according to AL.com’s Brandon Marcello.

A motive in the murder is not known at this time.

Two residents of the Tiger Lodge apartment complex in Auburn told AL.com they heard at least six gun shots after midnight in the adjacent building during the party. According to witnesses, approximately 100 people scattered in the parking lot as the gunfire ensued.

“I heard people running down the stairs and then lights everywhere,” George Morgan, a resident in the complex told AL.com. “It was like cockroaches when the lights came on.”

Police responded to a 911 call at 12:25 a.m. Sunday where Mitchell was discovered in the front seat of a car with multiple gun shot wounds. Mitchell was later pronounced dead at the East Alabama Medical Center.

Hart reportedly has a history of criminal activity. He’s being held on $150,000 bond at the Lee County Jail.

The Tiger Lodge has been the scene for several violent altercations in recent years. Two Auburn football players were among three men killed there at a party in June 2012.

“I know the Auburn family is hurting, especially our players and coaches, and we are going to love and support them through this difficult time,” head coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement. “We have lost a member of our family too young, too soon.”
