Should Auburn be considered the 2004 national champion? ESPN College GameDay apparently thinks so.

During Saturday’s broadcast, the show chronicled the LSU-Auburn rivalry, including Auburn’s 10-9 victory on a game winning field goal, which was described as being “on the way to winning a national title.”

In reality, USC defeated Oklahoma, 55-19, in the Orange Bowl BCS National Championship Game. Auburn, who finished with a perfect 13-0 (8-0 SEC) record, was snubbed from the title game and finished No. 2 overall.

In fairness, however, USC was stripped of its 2004 BCS title so ESPN may have a point. Although Auburn didn’t win the actual national championship game, its could be argued as the replacement champion.
