Paul Finebaum has a message for 'annoying' Dabo Swinney: Here's a pacifier
Three days after Chris Fowler suggested Clemson coach Dabo Swinney needs to settle down with the no respect talk in relation to the College Football Playoff, ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum has come out with a strong response.
This is in reaction to Swinney’s comments after a rout of South Carolina.
“It’s huge from a national standpoint, because if we lose this game, they’re going to kick us out,” Swinney said of the CFP. “They don’t want us in there anyway.”
He added, “We’d drop to 20,” Swinney said. “If Georgia loses to this very same team, the very next day, it’s how do we keep Georgia in it. We win to the team that beat South Carolina and it’s how do we get Clemson out. It’s the dadgumest thing. It’s big, because they can’t vote us out. We got to go 30-0, we ain’t got no choice,” Swinney said. “We don’t play nobody. “It’s big from a national standpoint, but it’s huge for this state. It’s huge for our program and yeah, we lost 5 in a row, and a big part of that, we were 15 turnovers to their 3 in that five-game stretch … you get your butt beat. We’ve turned that around.”
After Fowler said, “You’re undefeated. You’re ranked third. No one is trying to keep Clemson out of the playoff,” Finebaum on Tuesday morning on ESPN’s “Get Up” had stronger language.
“I think Dabo Swinney is the most annoying winner in all of sports,” Finebaum said. “The guy just can’t keep his trap shut. Somebody just give the man a pacifier, send him to timeout and we’ll check in with him on Dec. 28 when he finally plays a legitimate team during this entire college football season.”

The biggest “whiner” ever to coach major college football ! Let’s swap teams…Put Vandy in the ACC and Clemson in the SEC and let;s see how many WINS you get per year, Dabo ? You’d Not Ever Be in the Natty Game ever again. If your teams played anyone that had even a faint heartbeat, then your teams would get respect, but since you do not…the respect is not there…nor will be. Respect must be earned, in life and in FOOTBALL.
I watched the first hour of Finebaum yesterday for the first time in about two years.
Here is my take: Paul Finebaum could not explain what happened at the end of the Iron Bowl if his life depended on it. He has very little interest in, or the understanding of, procedural aspects of the game, and never discusses X’s and O’s.
In the first hour of the show, there was exactly ONE MENTION of any specific Iron Bowl play, and that was when a caller said he didn’t agree with the extra one second, and Paul asked him, “what’s the difference between this game and wanting another second in 2013?”.
Well, for starters, the 2013 game involved a out-of-bounds play, which STOPS THE CLOCK. No one within a mile radius of his studio seemed to be aware of this difference, and the caller congratulated him for making a good point, and everyone moved on from this moment of ignorance.
If you want to spend three hours hearing people speak very, very slowly, make almost no intelligent observations, and discuss virtually nothing except Nick Saban’s legacy and how everything in football might or might not affect Alabama, you’ll love this show.
I’ll never watch again.
Finebama is a Bama homer. The nut who poisoned Auburn’s trees made him. He has kissed Saban’s ass so much his nose is permanently brown. His biggest fear is that Dabo will go to Bama when it finally ditches Saban. Finebama would never get another interview and he’d be lucky to be back covering Birmingham dog catchers.
You must never listen to fimbaum.
Bobby Bowden could have coached in SEC but didn’t for one reason: he said it’s easier to win a natty in ACC. Nothing has changed. Dabo is sitting pretty and will be for years unless he is stupid enough to go to Bama when they offer him the job.
FSU was the fox in the ACC’s hen house, and Bobby knew it. For all his “aw shucks” stuff, he was no dummy.
Someone pacify this: Baylor has played one – 1! – ranked team all season and LOST. So why are they ahead of Florida in the CFP? Total anti-SEC bullschitt.
I agree. Utah has exactly zero victories over top-25 opponents and is getting lots of love too.
Utah has actually looked impressive. Would you really put a two loss team ahead of a one loss team at this point? I think if Utah beats Oregon by a significant margin, they should get in no arguments there.
Playoffs must expand to 8 (16 would be better). Settle this on field. The way it is, a handful of teams get the best players. It’s why NFL has drafts.
Vol1 – it wouldn’t change anything if the playoffs were expanded. You’d probably actually have more whining than now. Plenty of teams know for a fact they aren’t in the top 4 in the country and just keep their trap shut. If you asked who’s top 8 or 16 – many many more people would be clamoring for attention…
Maybe 8, but 16 is overkill.
A sixteen team playoff would lead to some teams sitting players and “resting” them for the playoffs, like many NFL teams do. No thanks.
NCAA football has, by far, the best regular season in all of organized sports. Let’s not throw out the baby with the bathwater.
I just wish Fsu and Miami were what they used to be…give whinny Dabo something to whine about… hopefully Fsu will hire right guy…to give whinny some competition…I don’t think Dabo would come to Alabama…he knows it’s easier to win at Clemson..where else can you make a playoff and not play one game against a top 25 team…I would like for Dabo to tell us all who’s the best team Clemson beat this year so far….7-5 TAMU…
It was Dabo who took FSU down and sent Jimbo Fisher running scared to Texas A&M in the first place, remember?
2013: FSU wins title
2014: FSU barely beats Clemson (Watson was injured and didn’t play the entire game)
2015: Clemson’s run begins and FSU’s downward slide starts
FSU was winning 11-12 games a year before Dabo got Clemson rolling. That machine got 4 ACC coaches canned or to split before it happened (N.C. State, UNC, Georgia Tech, FSU). Also, in 2015 the ACC had 3 teams ranked in the top 15. In 2016, they had 5 teams ranked in the top 20 (Clemson, Louisville, FSU, VT, Miami) as well as two first round draft picks at QB that year (Watson and Trubisky) as well as the Heisman winner (Lamar Jackson, who will be NFL MVP this year unless he gets hurt in the next game or 3).
So claiming that Clemson’s success is due to a lack of competition is ignorance.
That a** whipping Dabo laid on the Tide in January has messed Finebaum up something fierce. Dude cannot resist a chance to talk trash about Clemson and Dabo. He sounds like a jaded ex-girlfriend whose ex moved on to better things and now she can’t quit talking ish about said dude. HAHA!
Yawn. Clemson is 9-2 against the mighty SEC since 2015. The only ones to beat them in that stretch? Alabama, who they are 2 out of the last 3 against in the playoff. When you add FSU over Auburn, the ACC is 3-1 against the SEC in championship games since 2013.
So I don’t know where this SEC superiority notion comes from. It certainly hasn’t been earned on the field over the last 7-8 years. Especially when you consider that Alabama lost a playoff game to an Ohio State team playing its 3rd string QB too. Alabama fans were trying to cite that team as an example of why they should be let into the playoff without Tua … only to give up 48 points (a combination of bad defense, bad special teams and turnovers) while falling to 3 loss Auburn.
And what happened to Finebaum’s “guarantee” on Alabama getting revenge? And “Clemson isn’t the same one as last year”? Amazing …
FSU got blown out 59-20 to the team the lost by 22 in the natty to OSU.
If Dabo wasn’t such a idiot he would lean on the fact there the defending champs rather than trying to compare teams and games like the average idiot fan.
True
Hey Colorado fan…I won’t even talk about what a dumpster fire that’s been for almost 30 years…first off Jimbo didn’t run from Dabo..he ran toward 70 mil over 10 years… which is crazy..Jimbo is the most overrated over paid coach in America..he had two great years at Fsu… because he had Winston at qb…yeah Jimbo won a championship but so did Gene Chizik.. Jimbo hasn’t won a big game since he got to TAMU..and in 3 or 4 yrs TAMU will be trying to find a way to rid their program of him…I was talking of Bowden’s noles..not the couple good years Winston was there… though he or the Unc guy you mentioned being first round draft picks..what have they done in NFL? Yeah Jackson has been great but Louisville went back to the bottom after he left…the acc sucks buddy…no matter how much Dabo and sec haters like you deny it…just look at the facts..they are playing a championship game against a team with 3 losses and not one good win…it’s not Clemson’s fault…it’s just a fact…no body here has said Dabo isn’t a good coach or Clemson isn’t a good team..I happen to think they might be best team out there… But it Dabo’s constant whinny mouth people are tired of… act like a championship coach and just prove it on field at playoff time… He’s beat Saban and Bama twice in 4 yrs…but so has Gus Malzhan…the difference is Malzhan doesn’t coach in cream puff conference with no more than one good team… yes Clemson has had a good record against sec last few years…but only two of those teams are worth bragging about beating… Anyone that doesn’t see that Clemson has the easiest path to the playoffs is as delusional as Dabo…no all Dabo’s success isn’t due to lack of competition..he still had to win the playoffs twice…but the lack of competition does help him get there…like I said before… Clemson might just be the best team in sec if they were in it…but Dabo would find out..it’s alot different playing at places like Lsu, Auburn,Bama,Uga,Fla…than playing at Wake Forest,Pitt, Virginia,…I’m trying to think of the other so called good teams in acc… those are only ones in could come up with this year…a scary good bunch for sure…
