Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams has been suspended pending an investigation by the program into comments made to a player last week the school deemed “inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive.” The school is also reportedly investigating another incident earlier in the season where Adams spit on what appears to be the same player.

According to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman, Adams told one of his players there is “always a master and a servant.” The school is looking into those comments. Adams said in a statement to Stadium they were not racially insensitive and that he was quoting the Bible.

“I was quoting the scripture,” Adams told Stadium. “It was a private conversation about coaching and when you have a job, and being coachable.”

According to a release from the school, athletic director Kirby Hocutt was made aware of the comments last Friday. Upon learning of the incident, Hocutt addressed the issue with Adams and issued him a written reprimand. Hocutt then made the decision to suspend Adams effective immediately.

The other incident in question involved a game earlier in the season when Adams reportedly spit on the player. According to Goodman, Adams said he had a bad cough and “slobbered” on the player during the game but an anonymous source recalled hearing Adams tell the player “I can spit on you whenever I want to.” Adams told Stadium he does not remember saying that.

Adams, 66, is in his 2nd season as the Red Raiders head coach. He was promoted from his role as an assistant on former coach Chris Beard’s staff when Beard left for Texas. Tech went 27-10 and advanced to the Sweet 16 in Adams’ first season in charge, but this year saw the Red Raiders go just 5-13 in conference play.

According to ESPN, If Adams were to be fired without cause, he would be owed 60% of what is remaining on his contract: more than $7 million.

Adams doesn’t seem to have much support from the locker room, though, with Goodman citing a source saying they’d be “shocked” if Adams coached another game for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech plays West Virginia in the 1st round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday.
