Caitlin Clark helped break another record on her last night of being a college basketball player.

Clark entered the 2024 WNBA Draft as the presumptive No. 1 overall pick. That did not stop fans from tuning in record numbers to hear Clark’s name called for the Indiana Fever.

The WNBA Draft drew 2.45 million viewers for ESPN. As one might expect, that smashes all the ratings numbers.

The previous high for the WNBA Draft was 601,000 viewers in 2004. An estimated 512,000 viewers watched the 2023 draft.

Monday’s draft drew a larger audience than the last seven drafts combined.

Clark helped grown women’s college basketball. Can she do the same for the WNBA?

Throughout the last two seasons of her decorated Iowa career, Clark stated that she was on a mission to grow the game of women’s basketball. Clark was highly successful in her mission, as ratings record fell throughout her chase for the Division I scoring record and Iowa’s NCAA Tournament run.

The big question, now, is how many new fans who were captivated watching Clark in college will tune into Fever games? The draft record is, obviously, an encouraging sign for the league.

Clark was considered a lock to go No. 1 overall, as betting odds indicated. Still, fans wanted to hear Clark’s name called and see her on the draft stage in Brooklyn. Cameron Brink, Kamilla Cardoso, Angel Reese and others were also ratings draws, but Clark was undoubtedly the night’s biggest star.

Another encouraging sign that Clark fandom isn’t about to fade: Fans are buying up Clark jerseys. According to Fanatics, Clark has already topped Trevor Lawrence’s draft-night jersey sales record.

Fans who follow Clark Fever to Indiana should be in for a treat watching the former Iowa star play alongside Aliyah Boston. With 36-of-40 games on national TV, Clark is likely to help break more ratings records.
