Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. passed away on Wednesday from injuries sustained during a college football game in October.

Burnett was pronounced dead on Wednesday evening by Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Matt Angelo, according to CBS 42. The coroner’s report came after a whirlwind 24 hours for Burnett’s family and the school.

Wednesday morning, Alabama A&M erroneously reported that Burnett had died Tuesday night. The school attributed the mistake to false information provided by the family and retracted its statement later that day, saying Burnett was still alive and in stable condition at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

An update on the GoFundMe page Wednesday said Burnett was “having a tough time” but that the family was “holding on til the very end.”

At the time of publication, that was the most recent update on the GoFundMe page.

Burnett, 20, was injured on a head-to-head collision in Alabama A&M’s game against Alabama State on Oct. 26. According to updates from his sister, Dominece, Burnett was taken to the ICU where he had to have a craniotomy to combat swelling in his brain.

Burnett, a 6-foot-2 native of Lakewood, California, played at Mayfair High School and began his college football career at Grambling State University before transferring to Alabama A&M.

He played in 7 games for the Bulldogs this season and recorded 5 tackles.

No cause of death had been listed for Burnett, although tests are pending, according to CBS 42.
