Catch of bowl season? Minnesota grab somehow upheld after replay
Minnesota’s offense has been surprisingly impressive against Auburn’s strong defense throughout the first half of the Outback Bowl. But this catch by Tyler Johnson was not only the best play of that game, it’s likely the best catch of the entire bowl season.
Johnson hauled in the ball with an outstretched right arm for a one-handed touchdown with 32 seconds left in the first half, a 2-yard score, which gave Minnesota a 24-17 lead in Tampa. The play was initially ruled a touchdown, but replay also confirmed it upon review.
Johnson had another catch on that drive, and led the Gophers overall with six catches for 64 yards and the TD. He had one catch for 17 yards. Rushing yards were 141 for Minnesota, to five for Auburn.
Minnesota largely controlled the first half, with a big edge in first downs, 15-4 and total yards, 291-110.
