College football fans destroy Illinois-Penn State during OT game
By SDS Staff
Published:
College football’s “2-point shootout” model of overtime is not a hit – at least with two Big Ten teams.
No. 7 Penn State and unranked 2-5 Illinois went to overtime in Happy Valley. After trading field goals, the Nittany Lions and Fighting Illini in the first 2 overtime periods, it went to 2-point conversion attempts in OT3. I
t took until OT8 for either team to score. Both squads did, forcing OT9. Illinois scored to pull off the upset 22-20.
The process to get to the final score, however, was not enjoyable viewing for college football fans. Both teams were called out on Twitter. Here’s a small sample of what was said:
Apparently nobody for Penn State or Illinois can catch.

This is the worst five-OT game in college football history.

This OT thing is stupid. No one can get any flow.

I have just arrived home and based on how many OTs Penn State and Illinois are in with a grand total of 32 points between them, clearly some perverse things went on while I was gone
— Amanda Mull (@amandamull) October 23, 2021
Just call it a draw and send both teams home.

If one of the teams isn’t Ohio State I’m done watching Big 10 football. This is pathetic?

This Illinois-Penn State game may be the death of the new overtime format.
This is tough to watch

There may be time for the NCAA to pass legislation declaring ties to be legal again before this ends

They just play rock-paper-scissors to end this Illinois-Penn State game

College football OT is so damn stupid. Put the ball at the 40 to start, and get rid of this 2 point shootout crap.

This game is a great argument for the tie.

Anyone who opposes the sale of alcohol in Beaver Stadium needs to reconsider after watching this game.
