College football is a beautiful sport, and sometimes it’s a touch of pettiness that provides the backdrop for some fun exchanges.

Needless to say, it hasn’t been an easy start to the season for Western Kentucky. Last Saturday, the Hilltoppers suffered a 63-0 season-opening loss to mighty Alabama in Tuscaloosa. That was predictable though.

But now the Western Kentucky program has a different issue to deal with in Week 2. The program announced in July its intentions to do a “white out” for the home opener this Saturday against Eastern Kentucky. Every year, the Hilltoppers wear white uniforms, helmets and pants for their annual “white out” game.

But Eastern Kentucky didn’t get the memo — or at least the Colonels didn’t want to play along.

Apparently, Eastern Kentucky informed its in-state rival that it would be exercising its right as the visiting team to wear its white jerseys. That means that Western Kentucky will have to wear its red jerseys.

Both teams must agree to a uniform switch, according to NCAA rules.

Western Kentucky was hoping Eastern Kentucky would agree to the switch, thus allowing the Hilltoppers to wear white since, well, it’s supposed to be a “white out” on Saturday night. According to Western Kentucky, many of its opponents have agreed to this switch in past years, thus clearing the way for the “white out” to take place.

Regardless of how this all shakes out with the colors on the field, Western Kentucky is still telling its fans to wear white. Things could get awkward, and Western Kentucky isn’t happy about the whole ordeal.
