Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 28 medals at the Games. Throughout his competitive career, he set Olympic records for gold medals (23), gold medals in individual events (13), and medals in individual events (16). At the 2004 Summer Olympics, he tied a record for medals at a single Games (8). Four years later, he claimed 8 gold medals to break another record.
After the 2004 Games, Phelps joined longtime trainer Bob Bowman at Michigan after Bowman was hired to coach the school’s swim team. Phelps was a volunteer coach, trained, and attained classes at Michigan for 4 years but did not pursue a degree and was not a student-athlete at the university.
Still, he has been outspoken in his love of the Maize and Blue.
No. 10 Michigan puts its 23-game home winning streak on the line on Saturday against No. 3 Texas. This will be the 16th time Michigan has hosted the show. The Wolverines have made 39 previous appearances on the show, going 21-18 in those games.
The Wolverines (1-0) got their season started with a 30-10 victory over Fresno State last week. Texas (1-0) beat Colorado State 52-0.
Kickoff on Saturday is set for noon ET on FOX.
