DeSean Jackson set to become CFB head coach at Delaware State, per report
DeSean Jackson is close to entering the college coaching world for the first time as the head coach at Delaware State, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Thursday.
The 38-year-old and the school are finalizing a deal for him to become the head coach, according to ESPN sources. Jackson, who retired from the NFL a little over a year ago, had an on-campus interview recently at Delaware State, and according to ESPN the 3-time Pro Bowl wideout and the school are expected to agree to a deal in the near future.
Thamel reported that it has “always been a dream” of Jackson’s to coach an HBCU program, so being hired as the Delaware State head coach would be extra special for Jackson. He retired in 2023 and then dipped his toes into the coaching waters this fall as an assistant at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. It was a homecoming for Jackson, who played his high school football at Long Beach Polytechnic.
Jackson last played in the NFL in 2022 with the Baltimore Ravens, but he only caught 9 passes while playing in 7 games in what turned out to be his final season in the league. Jackson finished his NFL career with 641 catches for 11,263 yards and 66 total touchdowns.
Jackson also had a legendary college career at Cal, as he had 162 catches for 2,423 yards and 23 total touchdowns, being named an All-American in 2006 and 2007 before being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008.
Jackson would be coaching at the FCS level for his first college coaching job and taking over a Delaware State program that went just 1-11 in 2024.
