Following a 1-9 start to their first season at the FBS level, the Kennesaw State Owls are firing head coach Brian Bohannon according to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos.

Bohannon played college football at Georgia as a wide receiver after growing up in the state under the eye of his father, a popular high school football coach. Prior to helping jumpstart the Owls’ program, Bohannon coached under Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech and also had stints at Navy and Georgia Southern.

Kennesaw State began playing football in 2015, and Bohannon led the program to immediate success. After finishing with a 6-5 record in that opening campaign, KSU compiled a 57-13 record over the next six seasons. That stretch included four FCS playoff appearances and three quarterfinal showings.

The program did go through some rocky years as it prepared to make the transition to the FBS as a member of the A-Sun (2022) and an independent (2023), and that bled over into this 2024 season.

Under Bohannon, the Owls have been competitive in losses to UTSA, MTSU and UTEP this season, and they handed Liberty its only loss of the season on Oct. 23.

But, a 1-4 mark in C-USA play and a loss to FCS foe UT-Martin seemed to doom Bohannon. A 43-37 overtime loss to UTEP on Saturday appeared to be the final straw, although many will question the program’s willingness to get rid of a coach who has been with the program since its literal beginnings and brought it to great heights.
