Louisiana-Monroe issues statement on assistant following in-game altercation with player
Louisiana-Monroe has issued a statement on offensive line coach Cameron Blankenship after his incident with a Warhawks offensive lineman during a 28-23 loss on Saturday.
“In Saturday’s game at Marshall, Assistant Coach Cameron Blankenship made physical contact with a ULM student-athlete on the sideline. This behavior is unacceptable and not how ULM football conducts business,” the university said. “There will be disciplinary action taken against the assistant coach. Because this is a personnel matter, the discipline will be handled internally.”
During the game, Blankenship was seen on the field shouting at offensive lineman Drew Hutchinson, then charging after him as he left the field and appearing to shove him on the sideline. He would eventually need to be separated from Hutchinson by another player.
While coaches showing emotion toward players is nothing new in college football, Blankenship’s actions have clearly drawn concern among the staff. To his credit, Blankenship appeared to have calmed down later in the contest, but it’s clear that his actions crossed a line. We’ll see what punishment is handed down to him from the university.
Meanwhile, Louisiana-Monroe is now 5-3 (3-2 Sun Belt) in its first season under head coach Bryant Vincent. It next hosts Texas State.
