The NCAA is granting any Virginia football player whose eligibility expires in 2022 an extra season to play following the tragedy that killed Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry.
UVa athletics director Carla Williams confirmed the news reported by The Daily Progress on Wednesday after Virginia initiated and submitted the request, she said.
The Cavaliers finished 3-7 in their first year under coach Tony Elliott and didn’t play their last 2 games of the season, against Coastal Carolina and their annual rivalry game at Virginia Tech after the shooting.
Instead of playing, Virginia held a public memorial for the victims, and then the football players traveled to all 3 funerals. Thousands of people joined Virginia’s football team at the memorial, where Williams and Elliott spoke about the victims.
Perry’s funeral was held in Miami, Chandler’s in Virginia Beach and Davis’ in North Charleston, S.C.
