Put Paul Finebaum in the camp of those not impressed at all with Clemson’s narrow win at North Carolina last week when the Tigers needed to stop a late two-point conversion attempt to hold on for a 21-20 victory.

The SEC Network host and ESPN college football analyst was on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Tuesday morning and outlined why Clemson does not deserve to be among the top four teams in America. Clemson slipped from No. 1 in most mainstream polls following the close win.

“No they’re not one of the top four teams in the country,” Finebaum said. “I think for that poll to put them in there is ludicrous. This is not a lifetime achievement award, this is supposed to be based on what you’re doing right now and they beat North Carolina, North Carolina lost to App state the week before and Wake Forest the week before that. Clemson’s best win is over Texas A&M by two touchdowns at home, Texas A&M had to hold on to beat Arkansas, which is the worst team in the SEC.”

Dan Orlovsky, who was on set with Finebaum, agreed with him and said that the losses from last year’s Clemson team, particularly on the defensive line were undervalued.

“Clemson is still finding its way to replace those guys,” he said.

One of the surprising aspects of Clemson’s season has been the relative struggles by QB Trevor Lawrence, who impressed many people last year by leading the Tigers to the national championship and having NFL scouts drool over the possibility of drafting him.

“Trevor Lawrence has grown a lot of nice hair in the offseason but he hasn’t grown as a quarterback,” Finebaum said. “I thought he was one of the greatest quarterbacks I’d ever seen and could potentially be the best but there are quarterbacks all across the board right now that are playing better than him. Maybe the pressure is too much.”

Finebaum’s top four is Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and LSU.
