While the College Football Playoff is currently set to expand to 12 teams in 2026, that’s not stopping the commissioners of the 10 FBS conferences, plus Notre Dame, from looking to expand sooner.
In fact, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips, in an interview with ESPN’s Jeff Borzello at the conference’s basketball media day on Wednesday, discussed the “push” he and his counterparts are involved in to trigger the expansion for the 2024 season.
We’re trying. We’re committed to doing it. We really are, across 10 conferences and Notre Dame…We’re really unified in trying to get it done. It’s just the logistics of this thing are difficult. Not insurmountable, but time is not a friend of ours right now. Time is not on our side. There’s a lot of push to try to get this thing done.
While 2026 is the year originally cited for expansion since ESPN’s contract with the CFP ends after the 2025 season, there’s certainly a financial benefit for the FBS commissioners to do so sooner.
It will be interesting to see if a 2024 expansion gets over the line, but it won’t be for lack of trying.
