Ref in Baylor-West Virginia game inexplicably catches what appears to be a live tipped ball

Sometimes, your instincts take over and you just want to make a play on the ball. Sometimes, that happens even if you’re a ref, apparently.

During Saturday’s West Virginia-Baylor game, there appeared to be a pass tipped into the air off of a player’s shin or knee or foot.

As you can see below, the ref inexplicably decides to catch the ball, leading to confusion from players on both squads:

The play was ruled incomplete on the field. That’s the only logical thing to do when a ref does something that bizarre.

It’s possible the ball hit the ground before the ref caught it, but still, why would you do something like that on a play that’s so close?
