On Thursday, it was reported that the Big 12 had tabbed 4 teams as leading contenders to join the conference. A new report details the timeline of when those teams could join the conference.

College football insiders Ross Dellenger and Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated reports that the four teams – UCF, Houston, BYU and Cincinnati – are expected to formally apply for Big 12 next week. Those applications could be approved by Big 12 presidents during a Sept. 10 meeting. The SI report states that the league has the 8 votes needed for expansion.

Per SI, the 4 new teams could join the Big 12 by 2023 “or, at the very latest, 2024.” This opens the possibility that the Big 12 could briefly be a 14-team conference, depending on when Oklahoma and Texas officially join the SEC.

SI states that UCF, Houston and Cincinnati are required to give the AAC 27-month notice to their league and pay a $10 million exit penalty. On the proposed timeline, however, the schools are expected to give 23-months notice and pay a steeper penalty. BYU football is independent but the school must give the West Coast Conference notice (how much notice is not specified) for its other sports leaving the league.
