A scary situation developed this weekend when Louisiana-Monroe quarterback Rhett Rodriguez, the son of Warhawks offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez, was hospitalized due to a lung injury. The elder Rodriguez shared the news on Twitter after the team’s game against Troy on Saturday.

However, there’s now a positive update to share regarding the younger Rodriguez’s status.

Rich Rodriguez told ESPN’s Heather Dinich on Tuesday that his son has returned home after previously being in the intensive care unit at Francis Medical Center. He had a collapsed lung and chest trauma and was taken off a ventilator on Monday, as his father told Dinich it was “an amazing recovery.”

The former head coach at West Virginia, Michigan and Arizona, Rich Rodriguez is currently in his first season on Louisiana-Monroe’s staff. His son was named the starting quarterback in his first year with the Warhawks after he spent the previous 4 years at Arizona.

Although Rodriguez’s injury may have occurred on the first play of Saturday’s game, his father told Dinich, he went on to go 10-for-16 for 131 yards and a touchdown in leading Louisiana-Monroe to a 29-16 home victory over Troy.

It’s not yet clear when Rodriguez may potentially return to action following this injury.
