A top Group of 5 quarterback is set to enter the transfer portal following an outstanding 2024 season.

Darian Mensah, Tulane’s starting quarterback, will enter the portal, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The 3-star recruit from Southern California joined the Green Wave out of the class of 2023.

Mensah took a redshirt year in 2023, Willie Fritz’s final year with the program before taking the reins at Houston. Mensah then beat out Oregon transfer Ty Thompson to win the starting job under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall for 2024 and impressed, throwing for 2,723 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions.

His best performance came on Sept. 28 in a win against South Florida, when he was 18-for-22 for 326 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 0 picks. All told, he finished with 3 300-yard passing games while completing nearly 66% of his passes.

The Green Wave found themselves in a year of transition in 2024. After a 12-2 mark punctuated by a Cotton Bowl win over USC in 2022 and an 11-3 record in 2023, Fritz left the program for a power conference job. In Sumrall’s first year, they still were one of the better Group of 5 teams and went 9-4. They also appeared in their third straight AAC championship game.

Now, it looks as if the program will be in search for a new quarterback, whether it looks to Thompson or adds through the portal.
