Toledo coach slams SEC schools for poaching players
Toledo head coach Jason Candle led his team to a 41-17 win over Mississippi State on Saturday.
The Rockets, from the MAC, topped the Bulldogs behind a 285-yard, 3-touchdown performance from quarterback Tucker Gleason. Gleason added 40 yards on 10 carries as the Rockets ended the evening with a 169-66 edge on the ground.
After the game, Candle had some interesting comments about the recruiting practices of larger programs.
“These are the types of schools that recruit our players right off our roster. It’s a message that you can [succeed] here,” Candle said, according to the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland.
The transfer portal and NIL has certainly made it a brand-new ballgame in college football, especially as players from smaller programs are lured away by larger ones. As far as Mississippi State is concerned, it brought in 19 transfers in the offseason, the majority of those coming from program outside of the Power 4.
Regardless, the Rockets are 3-0, and can add a victory over a SEC program to their ledger for just the 2nd time in program history.

Toledo is the best program in the MAC. In recent years they’ve beaten Michigan, Arkansas and now Miss. St.
Get used to it and stop whining. This is the way football is today. You have major schools poaching players from other major schools, so what makes you immune to it happening to you. Your players want to go where they get more NIL money and a chance to be a higher draft choice.
