College football is back, baby!

While everyone is looking ahead to Saturday’s Week 0 lineup, the first college football game of the 2021 season actually took place Thursday night.

Valley City State University (North Dakota) hosted the University of Jamestown (North Dakota), and Valley City put a beatdown on Jamestown 24-7. The Jimmies were no match for the Vikings in the Paint Bucket rivalry.

However, in the fourth quarter, possibly the worst onside kick attempt ever took place. With Valley City up 24-7 and over 7 minutes remaining in the game, Jamestown called the onside kick to try and get the ball back. Freshmen kicker Noah Vogelpohl lined up for the kick, and he literally kicked it backwards.

We’ve never seen this before.

The broadcaster’s comments were great, too.

“It’s going to be an onside kick, and it’s going to be one of the most awkward onside kicks you’ll ever see, as Vogelpohl tried to onside kick it off the tee and the ball spins backward,” the broadcaster says while holding back laughter. “I think Jamestown loses a yard or two on the onside kick.”

Valley City limited Jamestown to just 216 yards of total offense, including -7 rushing yards in the opener.

We’ll see some onside kick attempts this year that will make us roll our eyes; however, we likely won’t see any that are kicked backwards.
