Chalkboard App Review

Chalkboard Fantasy has all the great functionality you’ve come to expect from Underdog, Dabble and some of the other top apps in the DFS space. It already has an impressive 4.7-star rating in the App Store (iOS). It only has a 2.2-star rating on Google Play (Android), so it might be an app best-suited for iPhone users at this point in time.

Still, if you’re looking for a new DFS app, you could do a lot worse than Chalkboard. In the Chalkboard Fantasy app, you can make picks involving spreads, points totals and the traditional higher/lower player stats. While it doesn’t have the social functionality that an app like Dabble has (more on that later), it does help users stay connected.

All in all, it’s a well-run, user-friendly DFS app that is definitely on its way up in the space. Here’s a quick look at what Chalkboard does well and where it can improve:

What Chalkboard does well

  • The user interface is mostly described as clean and intuitive. Users often comment that navigation is straightforward, and the design is friendly for DFS newbies.
  • Strong community features: in-app group chats, sharing picks/strategies between friends, making contests feel communal rather than competitive.
  • Alternate lines and pick types are presented clearly, and the “single tap” ability to jump from a player to all their stat-props is a plus.
  • Live picks: Chalkboard supports “Live Picks” (entering contests even after games have started) which enhances engagement.
  • Beginner-friendly: The layout, promotional materials and other data points show that the Chalkboard DFS app is accessible to new daily fantasy sports players.

What Chalkboard could do better

  • Some users report stability issues, especially on Android: crashes, persistent update prompts, and account verification hiccups, which explains the 2.2-star rating on Google Play.
  • Promotional/feature limitations can affect the overall user experience: for example, the “Shield Play” (insurance feature) doesn’t apply to same-game picks, which may frustrate users expecting the same flexibility as other platforms currently offer.

Chalkboard Fantasy is live in 30 U.S. states, as well as Canada (excluding Ontario) and Washington DC.

Below, you’ll find a list of the 30 states where you can play DFS contests via the Chalkboard DFS app:

  • Alaska, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming
  • And Chalkboard DFS is also live and legal in Washington DC and Canada (except for Ontario)
  • That means the states where you can’t play Chalkboard picks contests are:
    • Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia

Chalkboard DFS contest types

Chalkboard DFS allows you to play picks-style contests where you are given a player’s stat line and you choose whether they’ll have more than or less than that number.

For example, you could pick Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles to have more or less than 18.5 rush attempts in a game against the Dallas Cowboys. If he gets 19 carries and you picked more, you win that portion of your contest. If he has 18 or fewer, you lose. Simple as that.

Here’s a screenshot of an NFL contest I entered for the first game of the 2025 NFL season between the Eagles and Cowboys:

I also had Dak Prescott of the Cowboys attempting 37+ passes as part of that entry and took advantage of what’s called a “free square” involving CeeDee Lamb. That means Lamb’s receiving yards total was cut from 70-something yards all the way down to more/less than 0.5 yards. Those are no-brainer picks, and you should take advantage of them when you can.

Additionally, Chalkboard is one of the few DFS apps that allows you to make picks involving more traditional game lines like the spread and points totals. Here’s a pick I made for the Eagles-Cowboys game that involved the Eagles covering the 7.5-point spread and Philadelphia scoring more than 27 points:

That’s an interesting function that you won’t find on many DFS apps, so click here to sign up for Chalkboard today. Remember to use Chalkboard referral code SOUTH to score your pair of bonuses.

Now, let’s go over the different types of entries you can make on Chalkboard.

Max Cash vs. Shield Play

Daily Fantasy Sports apps across the industry have developed a bit of a game within the game when it comes to making your picks. Chalkboard is no different.

There are 2 different types of entries you can make with Chalkboard: Shield Plays and Max Cash Plays. In this section, we’ll quickly go over each and how to properly use them to your advantage.

First, let’s assume I made an entry with the following picks on Chalkboard Fantasy:

  • Jordan Love – More 100.5 passing yards
  • Trevor Story – More 0.5 home runs
  • Russell Wilson – Less 275.5 passing yards

These are exaggerated stats, if you couldn’t figure that part out yet. Love is averaging well above 100 passing yards, and Russell Wilson is struggling early with the Giants — so less than 275.5 passing yards is pretty likely to hit as well. Where it gets difficult is the only legitimate choice I left on the board — Trevor Story more that 0.5 home runs.

The Red Sox shortstop has just under 25 home runs on the year as of early September, but he’s far from the best home run hitter in the big leagues. The likelihood of that part of the contest hitting is not zero, but it’s much less than Wilson or Love hitting their respective picks. Make sense?

Here’s where Shield Plays and Max Plays come into the picture. If I was simply concerned with making a profit, it would be beneficial to go with a Shield Play — which allows for 1 miss on a 3-pick entry with less guaranteed cash if all 3 picks hit.

A Max Play, on the other hand, works differently — all picks have to hit for you to win any cash, but the multiplier is higher than that of a Shield Play because you’re putting more risk out there. If the multiplier was 5.86x for a Max Play, it would be 2.34x for a Shield Play if all 3 picks are correct and 1.21x if 2 of the 3 picks are correct.

Chalkboard’s Cash Out Feature

Not all DFS apps offer a cash out feature, but Chalkboard Fantasy does! Here’s how it works.

Once users have placed an entry, under certain conditions (that will be listed below) they will be offered a Cash Out value. If you suddenly don’t like your picks or a new development in the game has changed your mind (only NFL, NBA, and MLB offer in-game cash-outs), you can cash out to retrieve some assets that you believe you would otherwise lose.

For example, if you pick Jayden Daniels to throw for more than a certain number of yards and he starts hot but loses 3 offensive linemen on back-to-back-to-back plays, it’d probably be wise to take the cash out feature. More than anything, Chalkboard’s cash out option provides the user with some flexibility and strategy if picks aren’t quite going their way or there has been a change in the flow of the game.

This feature is available for all leagues offered on Chalkboard, but when you can cash out varies by league. Here’s a helpful table with the full breakdown:

Chalkboard Promo Packs Explained

Promo Packs are ways the app incentivizes players as they progress with Chalkboard Fantasy. Think of it like opening a pack of football cards: You get rewards (cards) of different rarities, such as boosts, XP boosts, deposit or match offers and so much more.

First, let’s start with a rundown on Chalkboard Fantasy’s promo packs system.

XP System and Types of Promo Packs

As with any video game, the more XP (experience points) you have, the more likely you are to unlock rarer and more lucrative rewards. This system differentiates the rookies from the hall of famers with Chalkboard Fantasy.

All users earn XP by interacting with the app, placing entries, winning slips, using the cash out system, referring friends and even just for signing up! The higher your XP, the more promo packs you earn. Here’s an overview looking at the different types of Promo Packs you can find on Chalkboard Fantasy:

Types of Cards and Tier System

Now it’s time to throw a bit of a curveball. Chalkboard’s tier system is incredibly unique and a great way to entrench yourself in the DFS experience.

As mentioned above, think of cards as mini promotions that offer different functions at varying degrees of value. It’s almost like spinning a prize wheel: You’re guaranteed to get something helpful, but other spaces are more rewarding than others. The best part? The more you play, the more rewards you get. As far as incentive programs go, it’s about as good as it gets in the DFS space today.

Cards are distributed with the following degrees of rarity: Common, Rare and Epic. Common cards are exactly like they sound – it’s the card you’re likely to receive the most often. Rare and Epic cards are less frequent and offer higher boosts and rewards, with Epic cards being the rarest of all.

Here’s quick breakdown of each type of card you can receive with Chalkboard:

  • Deposit Match: Adds bonus funds matched with your next deposit. Percentage varies by card type.
  • Free Entry: Place a free entry on Chalkboard. Entry value varies.
  • Player Boost: Adds a payout boost for entries on a specific player
  • Payout Boost: Adds a payout boost for entries on any entry
  • Respawn: Refunds any losing entry, so long as it’s used within 48 hours of settlement
  • Stat-Specific Boost: Adds a payout boost for entries surrounding a particular stat category (passing TDs, hits, rushing yards, points, etc)
  • League-Specific Boost: Adds a payout boost for entries within a specific league (NFL entries, MLB entries, etc)

Chalkboard Picks Purchases

Chalkboard makes it easy to jump into real-money DFS play by letting users fund their wallet with a debit/credit card or bank account and then build entries using its “Chalkboard Picks” format. Once your account is verified, you can select between 2 and 8 player-stat projections and choose “More” or “Less” on each stat line. Entries start at just $1 per contest, and each pick carries a multiplier that determines your potential payout. Simply put — the higher the multiplier, the more money you can win. Like most DFS operators, Chalkboard also requires picks from at least 2 different teams on every contest.

You can purchase coins on Chalkboard to use on certain contests, or you can go a more traditional route and add real money to your account to play DFS contests.

When placing entries, users can choose between Shield Play, which provides insurance if 1 or 2 picks miss, or Max Entry, which delivers the highest payouts but requires all picks to hit. Chalkboard also gives users a Cash Out feature on select sports (including most of the major sports leagues), giving players the option to settle an entry early based on live win probability. These flexible risk-management tools make the app appealing to both beginners and more aggressive players looking for higher multipliers.

Payouts vary depending on the number of legs and the format selected, with maximum returns reaching thousands of dollars on a single entry.

What are Chalkboard Coins?

Chalkboard coins are a virtual currency used on the DFS app that have no monetary value and can’t be exchanged for cash. They’re used as an option for DFS players to compete and hone their skills without the risk of losing real money. Chalkboard coins are a risk-free way to get in on the DFS fun and climb up leaderboards without having to put real money on the line.

Chalkboard Fantasy deposit methods

Chalkboard Fantasy has 3 main ways to deposit funds into your account. Those deposit methods are:

  • Apple Pay
  • Debit Card
  • Bank Transfer

I opted for the debit card route. Again, like everything I’ve experienced with Chalkboard thus far, it was a smooth process. I entered my card information and was able to easily and securely make my initial deposit to score my 100% first-time deposit match.

If you’d prefer direct transfers, you can connect your preferred bank account from most major banks. And Apple Pay is always a strong option, too.

How to cash out/withdraw from Chalkboard

Congratulations! You’ve won money playing Chalkboard DFS contests. Now what? Here’s how you get your money out of Chalkboard and into your bank account:

When it’s time to pull money out of Chalkboard, withdrawals can only be made to a US bank account that is in the name of your verified Chalkboard account. Before you’re eligible to cash out, however, you must complete identity verification (including providing a social security number) and meet any play-through requirements on deposited funds. There is also a cap of $5,000 on withdrawals in any 24-hour period.

Payouts are processed on a very regular schedule: Chalkboard handles approved withdrawals every hour between 8 a.m. and 2 a.m. ET. Once your withdrawal is approved, funds will usually land in your bank within 12 hours, although timing can stretch into multiple days depending on bank processing times. Importantly, bonus credits or deposit-match funds are not immediately withdrawable — only the real money you’ve won after wagering cleared funds can be cashed out.
