Billy Napier is set for a turning point season at Florida, and the coach shared some details about changes ahead for the Gators at a Wednesday press conference.

Chief among them for fans is play-calling duties, and Napier hinted at a change.

“We’re in the process of defining those roles is what I would say, we’re working our way through that. I do think there will be different responsibilities to some degree,” Napier said, and added that a future hire would allow Napier’s time to be “allocated in the right places. I think it’s been a heckuva 2 years in terms of all the new things that come with the job. Offensively, we may have different titles, responsibilities in that group of people. There could be an addition or 2. We’ve shuffled the deck in terms of those things, but ultimately we’ll keep the same system and keep moving forward in that regard.”

Asked about bringing in a new play caller, Napier said, “All that is to be determined. We’ve got time to figure those things out. But I don’t see any major overhauls outside of just how we organize that group and how we operate in house.”

With an 11-14 record in 2 seasons at Florida, Napier is widely believed to face mounting pressure this season as he’s often mentioned among the SEC coaches most likely to be on the hot seat. He shared the sales pitch for recruits, and noted what the 2024 season would mean.

“We need to get some traction on the field and we’ll be tough to stop,” Napier said.

Napier has said a couple times that the Gators need to keep more great players home in Florida. A couple recent wins with Grayson “Pup” Howard from South Carolina, and Tampa’s Jameer Grimsley from Alabama

Napier also confirmed that offensive line coaches Rob Sale and Darnell Stapleton, running backs coach Jabbar Juluke and edge coach Mike Peterson are returning to Florida for the 2024 season. Their original contracts expired at the end of January.

As for the defensive changes, Napier confirmed 3 additions in Ron Roberts, Will Harris and Gerald Chatman and said the changes were brought on by the need to improve recruiting and coaching: “It’s a good room and they’re in a good place,” Napier said.

Napier said that Austin Armstrong is still calling plays on defense and leading meetings, but that Roberts would “coach the coaches” and would “oversee” that side of the ball and approve the installation of the game plans.

“To get the best of that side of the ball, essentially,” Napier said.
