In light of the Michigan sign-stealing saga, the question of having radios in helmets has been a topic of conversation.

Unlike the NFL, the NCAA prohibits the use of radios in helmets, but it seems like that could change in the coming years.

Several coaches gave their thoughts on radios in helmets during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. Billy Napier shared his thoughts, and he’s not as on board as some other coaches are.

“I think it would quite a transition in my opinion,” Napier said. “I think ultimately, even if that’s available, I think you’ll have a number of coaches and staff that will continue to operate the way they do operate. I do think they’ll be — I think obviously it’s been done at the National Football League level. It will be quite the process to make that transition, but I do think the level of technology that’s available these days, certainly open minded to that. But I would think each team would have their choice of what they could do.”

If the NCAA does change the rules on radios in helmets, it likely would be a while before it became the norm in college football. With different programs having different resources available, there would certainly be financial and logistical issues that arise. But for now, the idea will continue to be a topic of conversation.
