Report: Key Florida assistant leaving Gators for the NFL
Florida quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson is leaving for an NFL job with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Johnson has been an up-and-coming assistant during his time coaching under Dan Mullen. He made a name for himself in the coaching ranks when he helped develop former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott. Along with others, he also adds Kyle Trask, who signed at Florida as a no-name quarterback, to his impressive resume.
Johnson has been rumored to be a head coaching candidate in recent years, and he recently interviewed for the Boise State head coaching job, too. However, with Dan Mullen calling plays at Florida, Johnson was more of a college quarterbacks coach, and now, he’s becoming a quarterbacks coach in the NFL.
Eventually, Johnson will become a head coach somewhere, either in college or the NFL.
He was simply too good to be the secondary OC under Mullen. Would not be surprised to see him as a head coach in the NFL soon. Bright future for Johnson. It will be interesting to see who Mullen hires as the QB coach. How about Kitna’s dad? Former NFL QB. NFL coaching experience. Coached up his son into a player.
agree about johnson. there was certainly a question mark next to him as to who he really was and how much value he brought….at least from those outside of the uf program. he’s got a great opportunity to showcase exactly who he is and further learn from others
No worries, I hear USF has an available grad Student but personally I’d recommend promoting Grantham, he wouldn’t even have to give up his defensive responsibilities, plus he’s great at making offenses click – win win
Yeh yeah, 1980…44-28 I’ll get off the yard now but all trolling aside, Johnson is a very bright coaching star imho. He’ll certainly be missed. I hear Jim Chaney is available…
Humper, awesome hire on the WVU def backs coach. Bangs is just grasping at straws. We’re going to throw all over that ACC strategy boy.
Thanks G8rMarsh…you whip enuff lemons you’ll eventually end up with a lemon and vodka meringue, poor Kubby, had to settle for the number 1 DB coach / asst DC from the number one P5 / FBS passing defense in the entire nation. I hate it that he keeps making the same mistakes over and over again…you do know WV is in the B12, yes?
Lol you gotta forgive me I’m in a brain fog. 10th day of Covid
Say it ain’t so…lol, day 4 positive here, thankfully mostly mild symptoms. Get well ol boi, the troll bridges need us!
Pine needle tea w honey helps. I’m on the way back. But nothing compares to Oban, honey and lemon. 5 a day does the trick. I think?
5 a day? I hate to cut back, but ok, thx for the tip…
Wish both of you a quick and full recovery
Thx box, I appreciate that
Get well soon Marsh.
Humper WTF have you been doing. You are in the most vulnerable age group being close to 90 and all. Lock yourself up in your room and stay off the net. If you can’t get a hold of the Hydroxy then grab some tonic water, a wegde of lime and 2 oz gin and inbibe
Good for Coach Johnson. He deserves to go to the NFL. Mullen will bring in the right quarterbacks coach. Go Gators!
very deserving i still want some of Utah after he carved us up
This comment won’t be popular, but i can’t help but see this latest move as another crack in the proverbial dam.
– ’20 certainly didn’t end as all gator fans were projecting after the cocktail party. what really went well after that game? seems like most are hanging their hat on a close loss to bama, which was still part of a 3-game losing streak to finish the year.
– for really the first time in his hc career, public opinion is questioning how good of a hc and leader mullen is.
– retaining grantham against all logic, with exception to a perception of loyalty
– the recent public comments from robinson that um was a better opportunity, situation than uf
i’m a uga fan, so i’m certainly bias, but i question any uf fan as optimistic about the dan mullen era at uf right now as they were this time last year….or especially after the cocktail party
So a coach, who was really just a QB coach since Mullen calls most of the plays and was the true OC anyway, leaving for basically the same position in the NFL and trying to better his career is suddenly a crack in the dam? Another interesting take from a Dawg fan. By the way, the only bad loss in that 3 game skid was LSU. Nobody beat Bama or even came as close as the Gators did, and the bowl game was obviously going to be a loss before it even started, so your take is a little misguided.
The delusional knows no bounds
Delusional? Like trying to spin a loss to Bama as a positive? UGA could say we were the only team that led Bama at halftime. But that’s pathetic. Johnson is getting out because he knows Mullet will be leaving as soon as gets an offer from an NFL team. Or gets “fired with cause” for repeatedly embarrassing the university. Then he could go hang out with Pruitt.
Uh joe…we were actually leading against Bama in the 3rd quarter, would you like to borrow my moral victory trophy? 8-4, 3 game losing streak, drop from 9 to 12 in recruiting classes, regression knows no boundaries even in a swamp…for you I also recommend Double doses of risperidone
i don’t think there’s any question that the move by johnson was a wise move by him in an attempt to furthering his career, but the move is simply the latest of a compilation of questions surrounding the uf program and what’s ahead. we’ll see.
It was a mixed bag this year for UF. Biased commenters will point to “3 game skid”, and I will agree the team seemed to reserve most of what it had for the Alabama game. I think the 7? SEC games back to back without any bye week because of the early Covid postponements also contributed to the problem when combined with the loss of the normal “Savage” conditioning. Would that have made a difference? Maybe.
Situations that lead to assistants being released are almost always negative and Florida had that as well. But also, having assistants “poached” for other gigs is often viewed as doing something right. Saban seems to have to replace assistants every year.
that’s fair…to point to the 7 consecutive weeks of sec games as playing a hand. beyond simply the physical impact, i’m sure the mental grind certainly took a toll on the coaches and players as well. unfortunately, for uf, the impact of the stress of the season…or the succession of games seemed to have worn more on mullen then anyone else…
it’s good for fans to support to their coach. i just came away with a # of questions about mullen this past season that i didn’t have going into the season
Breaking News: Tim Tebow to announced as the new University of Florida QB’s coach!!
Tebow had a slower wind up than Clayton Kershaw. I would love to see Timmy teaching UF QBs how to throw a ball. QB Whisperer II. Lol.
You freaking idiot. Tebow is a fierce competitor, a leader who inspired his teammates to give their all with a passion for the game and for winning that few others can come close to. He is not going to be the coach but he would be great at whatever he did
He’s been a hot candidate. Knowledgeable football folks can see Mullen’s genius and want some of that for their teams. Congrats to Johnson! Best of luck. You studied under a master and now reap the rewards!
“Mullen’s genius”. Yeah, ok… He’s a good coach, no doubt. But I just don’t understand the “genius” narrative. By that measure, every “good” coach must be a genius. Lol.
Not everyone is expected to understand genius.
mullen is a genius? Lol who knew?
Genius??? LMAO. I laugh out loud anytime anyone uses the term genius about someone that coaches a sport. Especially when they are referring to the UF Drama Queen.
Just stupidly ranting makes you look like a fool.
Can’t blame him for wanting to get out from under Mullen. Nobody wants to work for a head case like Cousin Eddie
Kirby is being talked about as the next great NFL coaching candidate, said no one ever
