D.J. Lagway verbally committed to Florida following his junior season. As a senior, Lagway not only maintained his 5-star status, he stood out as one of the best players in the country.

MaxPreps announced Tuesday that Lagway is its National Player of the Year for the 2023 season.

Lagway was a highlight machine in 2023 leading Willis (Texas) to its best season in program history, notching a 12-1 mark. Lagway completed 72.1% of his passes for 4,631 yards and 58 touchdowns, breaking the Texas Class 6A single-season record for TD passes. A true dual-threat, Lagway also rushed for 975 yards and 15 scores.

The 247Sports Composite ranks Lagway as the No. 3 quarterback and No. 10 player overall in the Class of 2024. He is one of two 5-star commitments in UF’s 2024 recruiting class, joining Mainland Daytona Beach (Florida) standout DL LJ McCray.

Florida’s class has taken some recent hits with blue-chip decommitments. Gator Nation is counting on Lagway to follow through on his verbal pledge and sign with UF on Wednesday. According to On3, USC and Texas A&M are making last-minute to try to flip Lagway for a signing day surprise.

We’re just a few hours away from finding out where Lagway signs.
