Despite being only 25 years old, former Florida DL Sharrif Floyd’s NFL career may be in jeopardy. The former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings is dealing with an unusual medical issue that may force him to hang up his cleats.

According to a USA TODAY report, Floyd is dealing with complications from a knee surgery he had last fall and has damage to the nerve that controls his right quadriceps muscle.

Floyd’s agent, Brian Mackler, refused to say his client’s career was in jeopardy, instead telling USA TODAY that the talented defender will do everything he can to make a return to the field:

“Sharrif is rehabbing, has seen some of the best doctors in the country, will continue to rehab and hopefully, this will heal sooner than later,” he said.

In 43 career games over four seasons, Floyd has recorded 95 tackles and 9.5 sacks while anchoring a stout Minnesota run defense. He was selected by Minnesota with the No. 23 overall pick in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
