Former Florida kicker Eddy Pineiro has landed with a new NFL team after he lost the kicking competition in Indianapolis to Rodrigo Blankenship.
The Washington Football team announced on Friday that it signed Pineiro to the practice squad.
The Colts released Pineiro, a 5-foot-11, 190 pounder, who was signed by the Colts in May, after he made all of his preseason kicks with the team.
NBC Sports Washington explained why the Football Team would make a move like this.
The move comes after Washington’s starting kicker for the past six years, Dustin Hopkins, had a shaky preseason. In the first game against New England, Hopkins missed both his field goal attempts. However, head coach Ron Rivera came to Hopkins’ aid, saying the team’s kicking problems went beyond just Hopkins himself. Last season, Hopkins went 27-34 on field goal attempts, posting a career-worst 79.4% success rate from spot kicks.
Pineiro was drafted in 2018 by Oakland, but was then placed on IR and traded to the Chicago Bears. In 2019, Pineiro went 23-28 (82.1 percent) on field goal attempts and made all but 2 of his point after attempts.
He missed all of last season with a groin injury.
