Former Florida running back Matt Jones is making the most of his XFL opportunity. One week after leading the St. Louis BattleHawks with 85 rushing yards in a season-opening win over the Dallas Renegades, Jones scored the BattleHawks’ first score of the day against the Houston Roughnecks in Week 2.

Jones turned a screen into a 25-yard score on third-and-15.

St. Louis’ lead did not last long as the Roughnecks answered with a score of their own, going up 9-6.

Jones, who turns 27 next month, last played in an NFL regular-season game in the 2017 season with the Indianapolis Colts. He began his professional career with the Washington Redskins, the team that selected him with pick No. 95 in the 2015 NFL Draft. Over three seasons, Jones appeared in 25 games with more than half of those games (13) coming in his rookie season. In three seasons with the Redskins and Colts, Jones logged 248 carries for 964 yards and 6 touchdowns as well as 27 catches for 377 yards and a touchdown.

Jones was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles during 2018, but was released before the start of the season.

The St. Louis-Houston game is in the second quarter and airing on Fox Sports 1.
